Apple's 'Spaceship' in Apple Park Cost $427 Million To Build

Buildings in the brand new Apple Park cost at least $1.1 billion, of which $427 million went to the "spaceship" and $179 million to the Steve Jobs Theater, according to building permits compiled by an online construction startup.

The Cupertino campus, which took four years to construct and covers 175 acres, opened to employees in April and to the media for one day during Apple's iPhone X announcement in September. The campus cost four times more than its Facebook counterpart in Menlo Park. Facebook's campus, which opened in 2015, cost $269 million, according to its building permits.

Both Apple and Facebook's permits were compiled by the San Francisco-based online remodeling marketplace BuildZoom.

The building permits only reflect a portion of the total construction cost of Apple Park, said BuildZoom's marketing associate Sasha David. The building permits show what Apple Park developers assume would be the minimum cost of building construction and does not factor in additional labor, design and infrastructure costs that are part of the estimated $5 billion campus.

"(The report) is just a window to look into some estimates of the cost of the buildings," said David. "This data is more comprehensive than what was out there before but it's not the entire story."

In the main ring-shaped campus, Apple spent $231.9 million for the main structure, $85 million for "landscaping and irrigation," and $25.8 million for the entrance tunnel that connects its parking structures to North Wolfe Road on the west end of the campus.

The main building's costs include a photovoltaic roof at $15 million that allows the campus to run on 100 percent renewable energy and two outdoor dining facilities with a price tag of $8.9 million.

For the state-of-the-art Steve Jobs Theater, Apple spent $161 million on the subterranean auditorium, which has a retractable wall to conceal its new products during special events. The Cupertino tech giant also spent $12 million on the above-ground lobby, which is made of four layers of curved glass and a circular carbon fiber roof.

Three additional Apple Park buildings cost more than $100 million to build. The Visitor Center, which sits on North Tantau Avenue, cost $109.7 million to construct. The Visitor Center is equipped with a retail store, a cafe and a rooftop deck providing a view to the campus across the street.

An additional four-story office building and two parking structures on the southern end of the 175-acre campus cost $115.4 and $113.7 million to construct, respectively.

Even the smallest Apple Park project cost six figures. The Glendenning Barn, a historic barn built on the Apple Park site in 1916, was relocated to a different location in the campus for $360,000.
