Acer is taking pre-orders in the U.S. and Canada for a tablet with a 10.1-inch screen that approaches Apple's vaunted Retina Display screen on the iPad. The Iconia Tab A700, priced at $450, has a screen resolution of 1920x1200 pixels, compared with the iPad's 2048x1536 pixels.

According to Acer, the Iconia Tab A700 delivers a pixel density that is 55 percent higher than what other Android tablets equipped with 1280x800p screens currently offer -- including Acer's Iconia A510.

Acer also believes that business professionals will find plenty of things to like about the Iconia Tab A700. "We do not offer a docking station," Acer's spokesperson said. "However, the micro USB port, MicroSD card slot and HDMI allow for ample expansion capabilities for business customers."

Under the Hood

Available in silver or black, the Iconia Tab A700 runs Android 4, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich, and is powered by Nvidia's Tegra 3 mobile processor. The processor features a unique "4-plus-1" core configuration under which four cores function as the device's CPU, while the fifth core is dedicated to low-power background tasks, conserving power in the device's 9800-mAh battery.

According to Acer, the new tablet's fifth battery saver core enables the tablet to achieve up to 10.5 hours of video playback -- or nearly eight hours of Web surfing -- from a single battery charge.

Acer's new tablet is also equipped with Nvidia's 12-core GeForce graphics processor unit (GPU), 1 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of storage memory. The tablet also has a 5-megapixel front-facing HD camera as well as a 1-megapixel rear-facing camera for enabling video chat sessions.

On the wireless side, the Iconia Tab A700 integrates GPS capabilities, a Bluetooth 2.1 enhanced data rate chipset for connecting to headsets and printers, and a Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) radio. Sound is enhanced through the integration of Dolby Mobile 3 technology featuring 5.1-channel home theater surround sound capability.

The goal is to sonically enhance the high-definition videos playing on the new tablet's 10-point touch capacitive screen, which has a 16:10 aspect and supports a wide viewing-angle range of up to 178 degrees.

"Customers looking for a no-compromise tablet will get the features and performance they want in the new Acer A700," said Paul Tayar, Acer America's director of product marketing for connected devices.

Other Tablet Features

The Iconia Tab A700's built-in micro HDMI port gives users the ability to display videos stored in the tablet's internal memory on other monitors, displays and TVs. What's more, the new tablet's HDMI port enables the device's Dolby 5.1-channel surround sound capabilities to be connected to the external sound system of a home entertainment theater.

Business professionals and students will appreciate the new tablet's integration of a built-in audio recorder, which integrates the requisite background noise cancellation technology for recording meetings, lectures and presentations. Moreover, the audio recorder also offerings a concert-mode setting that enhances the quality of sound sources that are more distant from the user.

On the software side, the Iconia Tab A700 ships with the Polaris Office 3.5 document reader and editor; the Evernote personal assistant for capturing and storing Web pages, documents and multimedia content; and Acer Print, which the company claims is compatible with 87 percent of the brand-name printers in the market today. And the tablet's Acer Ring user interface enables users to customize the launch of their favorite apps, programs and Web sites through the touch of a single button.

The Asus Infinity is supposed to match the resolution of the Acer, but is not yet available for pre-order and has not been priced.

Did you get the cameras mixed up or is the front facing camera really a higher MP than the rear-facing? Personally, I think this would be better for tablets but it's not the norm.
