Microsoft Challenges Google Searchers to 'Bing It On'

Bing it on. That's Microsoft Bing's message to America. If you go to right now, you can click and choose which Web search results you prefer -- and Microsoft is betting you'll choose Bing.

Redmond is pointing to its independent study that shows people prefer Bing search results over Google. Although most people identify themselves as Google searchers, the study shows people chose Bing Web search results over Google nearly two-to-one in blind comparison tests.

With those numbers under its search belt, Microsoft decided it is time to let people see the results for themselves. Bing is inviting searchers to take an online test designed to show that the quality of Bing's Web search results has surpassed Google's.

"Relevancy of search results is the number one driver of search engine preference, and independent research shows that people chose Bing's Web search results over Google's nearly two-to-one," said Mike Nichols, corporate vice president and chief marketing officer of Bing. "It's time to break the Google habit and learn why you deserve more from your search engine."

Challenging Google

Bold words or just a marketing gimmick to drive traffic? See for yourself. Here's how the Bing It On challenge works: Conduct five search queries of your choice and compare unbranded Web search results from Bing and Google side by side.

For each search result, you choose a winner or declare it a "draw." Once you've done this, the test shows you which search engine came out on top and lets you share the Bing It On challenge results with others via Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

"In addition to better search results, Bing also includes useful information from your friends and experts from Facebook, Twitter, Quora, Foursquare and more, which is not available on Google," Nichols said. "If you want the best search results and a new, more useful way to search with your friends, try Bing today."

A Challenging Challenge

Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence said prying searchers out of Google's grip will be a challenge.

"If Bing is confident that it will win most of the time, this may be effective in getting people to try Bing and even converting some number of users to Bing. I haven't yet done any systematic testing to see how the comparison comes out," Sterling said. "Regardless, however, Google's brand strength and the 'Google habit' is so entrenched it will be very challenging to get people to change their behavior."

Nevertheless, Bing is giving Google its best shot. Microsoft is promoting the Bing It On contest on nationwide television and launching an online ad campaign during MTV's Video Music Awards. For the next few months, the Bing It On challenge will also be prominently featured in Microsoft retail stores nationwide, as well as via pop-up Bing It On challenge stations across the country.

They didn't test whether you support Google's business model or Microsoft's though. Regardless of how minorly better Bing might be, I would rather support Google.
