In its second big launch since September, Apple on Thursday unveiled several new products, including the new iPad Air 2, an ultra-thin device with a fingerprint-reading sensor. Also announced were the iPad Mini 3, the Retina Display iMac and an updated desktop operating system, OSX Yosemite.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, other company executives and even The Colbert Report's Stephen Colbert, dubbed Apple's new "chief of secrecy," were on hand to talk about the new releases during a special event that was live-streamed online.

During the October 16 event, Apple also announced that its new mobile payment service -- Apple Pay -- would be launching on October 20. Both Yosemite and the iOS 8.1, the latest update of the mobile operating system, are also scheduled to become available that day. At a September event, Apple introduced the long-rumored Apple Watch, iOS 8, and the Apple Pay service.

Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, said the company continues to add more banks, credit card companies and merchants that will support Apple Pay, including Whole Foods Market.

"OS X Yosemite ushers in the future of computing, where your Apple devices all work together seamlessly and magically," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering.

18% Thinner Than iPad Air

The iPad Air 2 is just 6.1mm thick and features a fingerprint sensor for Touch ID. Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said the device is 18 percent thinner than the original iPad Air.

Other features on the iPad Air 2 include a graphics-supporting A8X chip that is two-and-a-half times faster than the one in the iPad Air. The camera has also been upgraded to an 8-megapixel iSight camera, and the device will provide up to 10 hours of battery life.

14.7 Million Pixels

Both the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 3 will be available for pre-ordering on Friday. Starting at $399 for 16 GB and ranging up to $599 for 128 GB, the iPad Mini 3 will run on iOS 8.1 and features a Retina Display. It also retains the A7 processor of the previous Mini.

With a 27-inch screen and 5K display with 14.7 million pixels, the new Retina Display iMac is being described as the "world's highest resolution display." It will be priced starting at $2,499, and features a 3.5 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor (it can be upgraded to 4.0 GHz) and 8 GB of RAM. Both the iMac and a new Mac Mini are available starting today.

Ha! - Yes, it would sure be "magical" to have any Apple Operating System work at all...
