As part of an expanded collaboration between IBM and CSC, Big Blue will offer its mainframe capabilities and cloud infrastructure to CSC and its clients. IBM will offer its Cloud Managed Services for z Systems to CSC customers making the transition to the cloud. The agreement includes mainframe hardware, software, monitoring, and governance support associated with the service, known as IBM Cloud for z.

For CSC, the agreement means reduced operational costs for clients transitioning to the cloud while at the same time improving its cloud IT infrastructure offerings. The collaboration comes on the heels of CSC’s announcement that it will be merging with Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Enterprise Service Division, creating a new, pure-play IT services company.

Playing to Their Strengths

"Many clients are looking for ways to make historically fixed cost more variable to migrate from legacy platforms to modernized applications and to a cloud enabled infrastructure,” said Stephen Hilton, CSC’s executive vice president and general manager of Global Infrastructure Services, in a statement. “This new cloud-based service expands our cloud offering and is a natural evolution of our long-standing alliance with IBM.”

The agreement builds on another made earlier this year, in which IBM agreed to make its cloud platform available to CSC clients as an option through CSC’s next generation IT services. The goal is to allow clients in industries such as healthcare, insurance, and finance to leverage the benefits of the hybrid cloud.

The expansion of the existing collaboration between IBM and CSC also advances their strategic objectives. For CSC, the partnership plays into its vision of itself as a “service-enabled enterprise,” while also supporting IBM’s “as-a-service” strategy, designed to provide clients with a consumption-based pricing model to make their capital investment plans more flexible.

Cloud for z systems refers to IBM’s service for running hybrid cloud deployments on its enterprise servers. The company’s Coud Managed Services for z Systems allow companies to run their business and application workloads on cloud infrastructures located in IBM’s data centers.

Greater Flexibility, Security

IBM’s Cloud for z support of CSC will make it easier for the latter’s clients to dynamically scale their computing resources and capabilities as their needs change, the companies said. The flexibility of IBM’s service model should also make for a more predictive pricing model for clients.

Since Cloud for z runs on IBM’s enterprise mainframes, the service will also provide CSC clients with greater computing security to reduce operating risks and cut the costs of their computing and IT operations by using a shared infrastructure for software, server, disk, and tape needs, IBM said.

IBM said it will also offer resiliency services to CSC clients that include disaster recovery as a service, which provides replication, backup and recovery of critical infrastructure, data, and systems to the cloud to enable a rapid recovery of applications and data.
