At the VMworld conference this week, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced what it says is the industry's first "composable platform" for the VMware Cloud Foundation. The new HPE Synergy infrastructure is designed to accelerate application delivery in hybrid IT environments, as well as more traditional IT environments.

IT professionals can use HPE Synergy with VMware Cloud Foundation to simplify their move to a hybrid IT infrastructure, deploying infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and private clouds, reportedly in a matter of minutes. HPE says the Synergy/VMware platform should help enterprises reduce their virtual machine expenses, compared to other systems that use public clouds and traditional server racks.

Single Infrastructure

The combination of HPE Synergy with VMware Cloud Foundation will enable customers to operate a single platform that runs traditional bare metal, virtualized SAN-based environments, and new vSAN-based workloads. HPE says Synergy is the only platform available today that provides a single infrastructure for IT to dynamically compose the right mix of virtual, traditional, and VMware Cloud Foundation.

The Synergy/VMware platform also enables an IT group to become an internal service provider of IaaS and private clouds. Reportedly in minutes, with a few simple clicks, IT professionals can use the HPE Synergy Image Streamer to deploy infrastructure and VMware Cloud Foundation software. The technology then helps IT respond quickly to requests for DevOps assistance on new and existing software development projects. HPE says its solution is superior to competing solutions available today that require multiple tools and steps.

Speed and Savings

HPE reports that Synergy offers the industry's fastest platform for VMware environments, noting that HPE Synergy recently set the world record VMmark 2.x Performance Benchmark, performing 41 percent faster than the previous top scoring server.

As the industry's first platform based on composable infrastructure, HPE Synergy is intended to provide substantial cost savings. HPE claims it can deliver virtual machines (VMs) at a 29 percent lower cost compared to traditional architectures and up to 50 percent less expensively than public clouds. In addition, HPE projects an increase for IT administrator productivity up to three-fold, as customers are seeing triple the number of IT devices managed by a single administrator.

Flex Capacity

HPE Synergy with VMware Cloud Foundation extends existing offerings from HPE and VMware, including vSphere and vRealize. These solutions are all built on a common architecture, including integration with HPE OneView infrastructure-automation software. The common architecture helps IT admins more easily manage and optimize their virtualization environments, especially when consolidating traditional, private and cloud native workloads onto a single platform.

John Gilmartin, who heads VMware's Integrated Systems Business Unit, suggests that customers will benefit from a "highly dynamic, programmable infrastructure foundation that eliminates the operational overhead of traditional deployments thanks to new built-in lifecycle automation capabilities."

HPE Synergy with VMware Cloud Foundation can be combined with HPE Flexible Capacity, an infrastructure service that offers on-demand capacity and a pay-as-you-go consumption model. HPE Flexible Capacity gives customers the ability to scale-up and scale-down as needed, paying only for what they consume.

VMware Private Clouds

HPE also used VMworld, which ran in Las Vegas August 27 - 31, to announce its new Private Cloud Express with VMware vRealize, a pre-integrated solution that includes VMware vRealize on HPE SimpliVity 380. Private Cloud Express is designed for remote and branch offices, offering what HPE says is "best in class" data services that simplify management and cut costs. It also provides application assessment services to help IT staff determine the best process for migrating different applications.

The company expects VMware Cloud Foundation on HPE Synergy to be certified and available from HPE as well as channel partners in late 2017. vSphere and vSAN are already certified and available with HPE Synergy today, while Pivate Cloud Express with VMware vRealize is targeted for September availability.
