If your IT department has faced painful delays in efforts to improve networks and systems that enhance business operations, you’re not alone. And Avaya has heard your plaintive cries.
A recent Avaya survey reveals these network complexities and delays are having a negative impact on most businesses. In response, the company is making moves to end what it is calling the “network waiting game.”
Specifically, Avaya said it has “dramatically simplified” network infrastructures with Fabric Connect technology driving Automated Campus, which now extends to the wireless edge thanks to the company’s new series of Wireless LAN solutions.
"Previously we needed six weeks for network changes,” said Albert Knoll, Network Operations Manage of Fujitsu Technology Solutions, about its recent implementation of Avaya Fabric Connect. “Today we can implement them in days."
That’s a big improvement, to put it mildly. So what’s behind the innovation? Avaya credits its approach. The company is supporting the next generation Wi-Fi standard -- 802.11ac -- which it says makes it possible for its Wireless LAN 9100 Series to slash waiting time by offering faster gigabit Wi-Fi throughput.
The WLAN 9100 Application Control feature recognizes over 1,000 of the most popular business and personal applications. The technology also empowers admins to create granular policies, such as restricting, blocking or prioritizing specific apps so that business-critical applications come first.
"We find that IT departments go to impressive measures to mitigate risk,” said Marc Randall, senior vice president and general manager at Avaya Networking. “The 'maintenance window' model of the '80s is methodical and precise. We have no issue with the process, but what we have done is remove the reason for the model."
No More Maintenance Windows?
The Avaya survey also revealed that companies wait nearly a month -- which is most of the maintenance window -- before they can drive major improvements to business systems. When you consider most businesses make about 10 changes each year, that means companies are waiting up to nine months for improvements that could spur growth, drive productivity, and improve overall business analysis.
Can Avaya’s networking portfolio eliminate the need for maintenance windows most traditional networks require? The company says yes.
According to the company, here’s how: Avaya Fabric Connect automatically configures the distribution and core switches. That means IT personnel only need to configure edge devices. And, again, Avaya's Fabric Connect now extends to the new Wireless LAN 9100 series, which the company said makes possible zero-touch provisioning of access points and edge-only provisioning of services.
"With many wireless solutions, the actual applications that users are running over the network are invisible to IT,” said Alan Hase, vice president of Unified Access and Identity Solutions. “However, this is critical to profiling and managing network usage. Avaya WLAN 9100 allows IT administrators to apply application-specific policies to manage network performance and security. The end result is a high quality user experience."
Avaya has deployed Fabric Connect to many of its largest customers. The technology is also serving as the backbone for its third InteropNet, the technological backbone of the Interop conferences in Las Vegas and New York. Pricing and general availability was not included in the company’s announcement.
