If you ask IT professionals what's keeping them up at night -- the answer you'll hear loud and clear is mobile security, according to the Good Technology Mobility Index report for Q1 2014. As well as using more secure mobile applications to help ensure mobile security, businesses are choosing to rely on iOS devices rather than Android.
In a recent blog post on its report, secure mobility provider Good Technology pointed to a separate report from The Ponemon Institute indicating that mobility and third-party apps pose the greatest security risks to businesses. To deal with those risks, secure mobile app activations have risen 57 percent since last quarter.
Enterprise's Greatest Risk
Replacing applications on tablets, smartphones, and PCs with more secure alternatives is becoming a major trend among businesses, according to the Mobility Index report. Most of the IT security professionals surveyed said that mobile devices are the most vulnerable to cyberattacks.
"In a survey of IT and IT security practitioners with involvement in endpoint security, 75 percent of respondents noted mobile devices, such as smartphones, represent the greatest risk of potential IT security risk," according to the Good Technology post.
Not only are businesses replacing third-party and mobile apps with secure alternatives, they are also investing heavily in custom app development. The combination of these industry-wide changes has made businesses better able to ward off potential security risks. According to Good Technology, custom app development rose 77 percent during Q1, compared to just 55 percent in the last quarter of 2013.
iOS Remains on Top
In stark contrast to the decrease in iPad popularity among individual consumers, Apple's tablet accounted for 92 percent of tablet app activations in Q1. Good Technology's app and device activation data is taken from its customers and seems to back up the idea that iOS is either more secure or easier to integrate into the workplace.
Combined, iPads and iPhones accounted for 72 percent of all mobile device activations during Q1. However, overall sales that included individual consumers paints a completely different story as to the popularity of iOS. In the mobile phone industry, Apple only has a 17.9 percent market share and in tablets, a 32.50 percent market share.
Very little has changed since Good released its Q4 2013 report, though Android gained one percentage point during the first three months of 2014.
Some Android-based operating systems are viewed as secure, such as Samsung KNOX, but Android as a whole is more vulnerable to cyberattacks. Since Apple maintains a greater level of control over its ecosystem and provides built-in security features with iOS, businesses may feel safer sticking with iPads and iPhones. Since individual consumers are generally more concerned about features and price, Android has primarily made headway with those users.
