Adobe Creative Cloud Gets Mobile Apps, Desktop Upgrades
Adobe Creative Cloud Gets Mobile Apps, Desktop Upgrades

Some enhancements to Adobe's Creative Cloud such as the Software Development Kit are targeted for high-end creative pros, while other new features are designed, Adobe says, for "anyone with a creative spark." Adobe Sketch, Line, and Photoshop Mix give users new ways to create content on-the-go and connect to files stored in Adobe's Creative Cloud.

Delivering on its promise to support the creative community with new technologies, Adobe has updated its Creative Cloud with a host of enhancements including desktop upgrades, new hardware, and new mobile apps that connect Creative Cloud to the iPad.

Although the new family of Creative Cloud-connected mobile apps are professional grade, Adobe says they are still easy to use, with the added benefit of extending workflows that were previously locked to the desktop.

In addition, the company has introduced two new drawing apps -- Adobe Line (for free form drawing) and Adobe Sketch (for precision drawing) -- together with its first creative hardware: Adobe Ink, plus a Creative Cloud pen for the iPad, and Adobe Slide, a digital ruler.

Mobile Solutions

For users on the go, Adobe has new mobile apps for creative imaging and photography: Adobe Photoshop Mix and a mobile version of Lightroom. With the latest release, users will also find a new Creative Cloud services experience, spanning the desktop, Web platforms, and mobile devices. When they’re logged into Adobe.com, users will be able to easily access their files, colors, fonts, community and collaborators.

Adobe Photoshop Mix offers a new Creative Cloud-connected mobile workflow so users can access creative imaging tools on their mobile devices. And Lightroom mobile is now available for the iPhone in addition to the iPad, providing users with what Adobe said is an efficient way to manage and edit images across desktops, mobile devices, and the Web.

Sketch, Line, and Photoshop Mix give users new ways to create content on-the-go and connect to files stored in Adobe's Creative Cloud. They were created using a new Adobe Creative Software Development Kit (SDK), aimed at speeding the development of third-party mobile apps that access cloud-based Adobe technologies.

Software Development Kit

Adobe’s new Creative SDK is a software library that lets developers tap into Adobe’s creative technologies to build mobile apps. The SDK enables developers to include and edit Photoshop PSD (Photoshop Document) files in their mobile apps, ensure mobile apps and desktop tools such as Photoshop and Illustrator are compatible, and offer new image editing capabilities in the cloud, the company said.

Adobe Creative SDK is initially targeted at the delivery of iOS applications and is currently being tested by select developers. A beta launch is expected in the coming months.

“Adobe’s new mobile apps, hardware and Creative SDK are perfect for creative professionals but, equally importantly, are designed for anyone with a creative spark,” said Scott Belsky, Adoble's VP of product and creative community.

Belsky said Adobe’s next-gen drawing tools, “can carry the designer's Creative Cloud identity, provide access to favorite color themes, and can even copy and paste across devices.”

Additionally, Adobe has updated Adobe Voice, a free animated video storytelling app for iPad that lets people create and share video stories. More than 50 thousand Adobe Voice videos have been shared since the debut of the app in May, according to the company. Creative Cloud now enables Adobe Voice to sync with users’ Lightroom photo collections.

Pricing and Availability

Adobe Sketch, Line, and Photoshop Mix are free applications, available in English, French, German and Japanese in the Apple App Store. Adobe Ink and Slide are available now via Adobe.com for $199.99. The hardware is currently available in the U.S. and is expected to ship in other regions later this year.
